Toronto police are at the centre of a provincial probe involving the shooting death of a 34-year-old Montreal man outside a movie complex in the city's east end.

The province's Special Investigations Unit is heading the probe into the fatal police shooting which occurred Sunday at around 7:30 p.m. outside the Eglinton Town Centre movie theatre.

SIU spokesperson Frank Phillips said at least one Toronto police officer fired their gun after they were confronted by a man who they believed may have been carrying a weapon.

The man was rushed to hospital but later succumbed to his injuries, said Phillips. The name of the victim is not being released to the public until his next of kin are notified.

Phillips did not disclose how many shots were fired.

"That's what we're here investigating -- exactly what happened, the sequence of events, and what's taken place," he said.

Though Toronto police provided few details about the incident, Phillips said police were called to the theatre for a report of a person possibly carrying a firearm.

A team of eight SIU officers are investigating the incident. Investigators are asking for any witnesses to come forward with information.

The SIU is an independent provincial agency that probes every incident in which someone is seriously or fatally injured in the presence of police.
