VANCOUVER - Toronto has been selected as Canada's most sustainable city.

Corporate Knights magazine says Toronto is number one because its greenhouse gas emissions are 40 per cent below 1990 levels.

The Toronto-based magazine also says regional trade initiatives have strengthened the local economy and the city has a growing middle class.

It also says Torontonians choose green commuting options and consume less energy in their homes.

The big city category also included Edmonton, Calgary, Ottawa and Montreal.
