Police in Durham region have charged a second suspect in connection with a double murder that took place early last year.
The suspect, from Burnaby, B.C., was arrested on Thursday by the RCMP and charged with several criminal offences.
Police say the suspect is also a resident of Toronto. The 29-year-old man has since returned to Ontario and was expected to appear in an Oshawa courtroom Saturday afternoon.
The arrests come nearly two months after Durham police told the media they believed that Harjinder Singh Sandhu and Puneet Singh Chhina were killed in Toronto and not Pickering where their bodies were found.
The men's bodies were discovered in the trunk of a vehicle parked near Rosebank Road in Pickering on May 5, 2009.
In December 2009 investigators said they believed the men travelled from Brampton to meet a person, or a group of people, in the Kennedy and Sheppard area on May 4.
After the men were killed, their remains were taken in their vehicle to Pickering while a second vehicle followed.
Sandhu, a 28-year-old Brampton resident, is the father of two small children. He was facing drug charges at the time of his murder.
Chhina, a 26-year-old Nepean resident, had never been in trouble with police, according to authorities.
"The investigation remains active and further arrests are anticipated," investigators said in a news release issued Saturday.
Vijay Singh faces two counts of each of the following charges:
- First-degree murder
- Kidnapping
- Forcible confinement
- Using a firearm in commission of an indictable offence
John Le, 38, was arrested last month in connection with the case and faces the same charges.
