The owners of a Scarborough exotic pet store suspect someone may have deliberately poisoned about 700 exotic fish in aquariums.

The owners of Indoor Jungle, on Kennedy Road near Ellesmere Avenue say at least 700 fish and 200 coral died suddenly Wednesday afternoon.

Toronto Police Staff Sgt. Gary Tutchener told CTV News that police are investigating after the owners reported a strong "bleach-like" smell in the store.

"It's some kind of a chemical or solution we believe that was put in there. It was a strong smell of chlorine from what I understand," he said.

Navid Azar, one of five owners of the store, said he believes the fish were intentionally poisoned.

He suggested that only someone with training and knowledge of fish and the conditions they need to survive would be able to pull off the job.
