TORONTO - Toronto police have charged a 22-year-old man in a Don Jail killing that brought calls earlier this year for government action on overcrowding at the facility.

On January 2, correctional staff at the jail found Kevon Phillip, 24, suffering from obvious signs of trauma.

Phillip was taken to hospital with life-threatening injuries and later died.

Police say Said Mohamed of Toronto has been charged with second-degree murder and is to appear in court on Thursday.

After Phillip's death, the New Democrats called on the government to move quickly to end dangerous conditions that are leading to violence at the jail.

The Don Jail is slated to close in 2012 and the inmates will be moved to the Toronto South Detention Centre, which is under construction.
