Mariam Makhniashvili's father was granted $50,000 bail on Monday, more than two days after he was arrested in connection with a stabbing incident.

Vakhtang Makhniashvili was taken into custody on Friday night after a man in the family's apartment building on Shallmar Blvd. was stabbed during a heated exchange, police said.

During his Monday court appearance, the elder Makhniashvili had a bandage around his left hand.

The 50-year-old is facing several charges, including aggravated assault and assault with a weapon.

Mariam vanished in September and has not been seen since, despite a massive police search. She was 17 at the time of her disappearance.

CTV Toronto's Austin Delaney reported that Makhniashvili was distraught after learning that a body had been discovered on the city's east end on Friday.

Delaney added that an altercation began over a noise complaint, and later escalated.

Makhniashvili's lawyer told reporters outside of the court that his client has been under a tremendous amount of stress since Mariam disappeared.

"I think that we can all understand that this type of circumstance … would be stressful for anybody," said lawyer David Kolinsky.
