Police are attempting to track down a driver who was clocked travelling 224 kilometres per hour on the Gardiner Expressway early Monday.

Officers say the driver should contact police and get a lawyer immediately.

Police believe the driver, who was behind the wheel of a Mercedes-Benz, had been racing with a BMW.

The driver of the BMW, a 29-year-old Mississauga man, was caught during the chase. He had his car impounded, his licence suspended and is now facing a hefty fine.

Police are accusing the BMW driver of speeding ay 189 km/h on the highway. The posted speed limit is 100 km/h.

Officers allege that the entire incident was recorded on their cruiser's video camera.

Ontario's street racing laws mandate that police immediately seize the suspected speeder's vehicle and licence for seven days when they are recorded driving more than 50 kilometres over the posted speed limit.
