Police are probing a suspicious death after the body of an elderly woman was found in an east-end apartment building Thursday morning.

The 60-year-old woman, who hasn't been identified, was pronounced dead at the scene.

The grisly discovery occurred at an apartment building on Lumsden Avenue, which is north of Main Street and Danforth Avenue.

Officers spent much of Thursday at the scene, but the death has not been ruled a murder. Later in the afternoon a man who appeared dazed was cuffed and taken from the scene in a police cruiser.

Residents at the apartment building said the man taken by police is the deceased woman's companion. One resident said the pair was a "nice couple."

Neighbour Maria Gaio told CTV Toronto's Michelle Dube that she was in shock about the death.

No charges have been laid in the case and police have not released a cause of death.
