A patient who had gone missing from a Durham region mental health centre is the same person whose dead body was found Wednesday in an Oshawa culvert.
Alexander Nolan, 24, had been out of the Ontario Shores Centre for Mental Health Sciences on a day pass on Monday when he failed to return, Durham Regional Police said Thursday in a news release.
On Wednesday at about 1 p.m., a city of Oshawa worker found a body in a culvert in the area of Nassau Street, south of Gibb Street.
Police then attended the scene. After investigating, they identified the body as being Nolan. An autopsy was commenced Thursday and will be completed by Friday.
Nolan had schizophrenia and required daily medication.
Police said Tuesday that as a result of his illness, he had been found not criminally responsible for a family member's death in 2003.
Ontario Shores said in a statement that its community was deeply saddened by the young man's death and offered its condolences to his family.
York body
York Regional Police say they have discovered the body of a man in a wooded area in the town of Georgina near Lake Simcoe, and they believe it to be that of a middle-aged local man who went missing more than a week ago.
A canine unit officer working with his dog made the discovery Thursday shortly before 2 p.m. Forensic identification officers and members of the Ontario Coroner's Office also attended the scene.
"... The identity of the deceased will be confirmed through post-mortem examination and will not be released until that has been completed," police said in a news release.
