Vakhtang Makhniashvili, father of missing teenager Mariam Makhniashvili, walked out of a Toronto courthouse Wednesday after a judge had released him on $2,000 bail.

He was released into the custody of his wife, Lela Tabidze. Vakhtang will essentially be under house arrest at their new apartment near Yonge Street and Eglinton Avenue.

The judge required Makhniashvili to continue to meet with a forensic psychiatrist.

The accused's lawyer, David Kolinsky, told reporters that his client faces additional mental health conditions this time.

"He will have to attend at CAMH (Centre for Addictions and Mental Health) and have an additional assessment," he said.

Police arrested Vakhtang in early May after he allegedly stabbed a neighbour in the family's apartment building at 20 Shallmar Blvd.

The family has said there had been a report of a body being discovered that day, and they agonized it could have been Mariam, who went missing on Sept. 14, 2009 after walking to school at nearby Forest Hill Collegiate with her brother George.

A court granted him bail on May 10, with one condition being that he not come within 500 metres of the victim. Two of the three people who offered themselves as sureties pulled their support on Monday.

As a result, police took Vakhtang back into custody.

In a letter sent to CTV Toronto and other media outlets, Vakhtang claimed that the pair, David and Rosita Langer, are private investigators.

Det. Dan Nealon, who has been the lead investigator in the effort to find Mariam, said the Langers got involved in Vakhtang's case for various reasons.

As sureties, they had a responsibility to ensure that Vakhtang was abiding by his bail conditions, he said, adding they had no hidden motive.
