Two English bull terriers running loose in a Mississauga neighbourhood were shot dead by police on Saturday evening.
Peel Regional Police received a call about two aggressive dogs touring a residential neighbourhood near Indian and Mississauga Roads around 5:30 p.m.
The dogs did not have collars on and were intimidating children and parents in the area, said Const. Wayne Patterson.
Animal control officers were called and police located the dogs in a nearby school yard.
Police shot and killed each dog; one dog was wounded and needed to be shot twice.
"It's unfortunate, obviously we don't want to see this, but if dogs are acting aggressive towards people, people take precedence," Const. Patterson said.
"We're authorized to take public interest into consideration with any animal. Obviously, with dogs, it's an aggressive dog that we would have to be mindful of to make that decision."
Neighbours helped officers locate the owners of the dogs.
