Halton Police, the Oakville Fire Department and other agencies want to find out how fires came to destroy two boats and seriously damage two others at a dock on 16 Mile Creek on Oakville.

Total damages are estimated at $600,000. Halton Police detailed the damages as follows in a news release:

  • one destroyed boat - $300,000
  • second destroyed boat - $200,000
  • two damaged boats - total of $100,000

The flames were spotted shortly before 2 a.m. on Wednesday, police said.

A witness at an apartment building that overlooks 16 Mile Creek at the Rebecca Street bridge saw at least two boats on fire.

"Upon arrival police and (firefighters) found the 2 boats fully engulfed while 2 others were in the early stages of being on fire. The Oakville Fire Department had the blaze under control within an hour," police said.

The Ontario Fire Marshall's Office is also taking part in the investigation.

"The Halton Regional Police Service Arson Unit is continuing to investigate this incident. Anyone with information related to it is asked to contact Ext 8738 or by calling Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477)," police said.
