Police have opened a homicide investigation into the discovery of human remains earlier this week in cottage country.

The remains of an unidentified woman were found near a Bracebridge-area cottage on Monday evening, specifically off Merrick Drive on Wood Lake.

The lake is about 15 kilometres east of Bracebridge and slightly north of Highway 118.

An autopsy was performed on the body, but police are not saying how the woman died. They are only saying that the case is now considered a murder.

Police have not publicly identified the woman, saying they are attempting to contact her next-of-kin.

Officers do not believe that the discovery is linked to the death of a man earlier this year. The man’s remains were later found at three separate locations in cottage country in May.
