TORONTO - The Human Rights Tribunal of Ontario has awarded $20,000 to a woman who was fired after telling her employer she had breast cancer.

The tribunal says in a release the payment to Elsa Torrejon is for general damages and lost wages.

It has also ordered Weston Property Management Corp. of Toronto to learn about Ontario's Human Rights Code and report back when the training has been completed.

Naomi Overend, the tribunal's vice-chairwoman, found that Weston mistakenly believed it could fire the woman, who was going to require time off work for surgery and treatment.
