OPP officers, with weapons drawn, took an allegedly erratic driver into custody after he came to a stop inside a construction zone at Yonge Street and Highway 401.

At least seven officers surrounded the truck on Friday afternoon, which was immobilized due to a damaged right front wheel.

They eventually punched out the glass on the driver's side.

The male driver mildly resisted. Police officers eventually grabbed his arms, handcuffed him and removed him from the truck's cab by pulling him out through the window. They may have used pepper spray on the man at some point.

The driver continued to struggle while on the ground. They finally had him subdued by about 2:40 p.m., meaning it took about 10 minutes to bring the suspect under control.

A Toronto EMS ambulance arrived at the scene. After a paramedic examined the suspect, they put him on a backboard and removed him from the scene. The ambulance pulled out shortly after 3 p.m. and took the man to North York General Hospital.

One of the police officers could be seen holding a puppy. The dog had been in the truck.

There were earlier reports of the truck driving erratically and hitting traffic cones as it headed west.

Const. Graham Williamson, an OPP spokesperson, told CTV News that the incident may have originated with a fail-to-remain at an accident scene in Cambridge, Ont.

However, he cautioned the matter is under investigation and it could take some time for police to determine what happened.

Earlier scare

Motorists along Highway 401 had quite the scare Friday morning as they tried to avoid a driver heading the wrong way along the busy route.

Several people called police to report the man, who was driving eastbound in the westbound lanes for about 20 minutes, from Trafalgar Road to Highway 427.

Several police cars tried to stop the vehicle but the driver kept going, narrowly missing getting into an accident with a patrol car. An Ontario Provincial Police officer was finally able to force the vehicle to stop at about 3:30 a.m.

Il Kyong Kim, a 39-year-old man from Aurora, was arrested at the scene and has been charged with a variety of offences, including dangerous driving and impaired driving.

He was released from custody Friday morning from the OPP detachment office in Port Credit but will return to court on Sept. 27. He declined to comment.

OPP Const. Graham Williamson said officers sometimes have to "go by the seat of their pants" in unpredictable situations, especially when there's a "huge potential for an absolute disaster to occur."
