One person was sent to hospital after firefighters responded to an early morning call at a motel on Lakeshore Road East.

The Willows Motel, located at the corner of Lake Shore Road East and Ogden Avenue (between Dixie and Cawthra Roads) caught fire around 4:30 a.m. on Wednesday.

According to Mississauga Fire and Emergency Services Platoon Chief Mike Head, the fire started in one unit and spread quickly to a second. Both were gutted, and smoke and flame spread quickly to the attic. Although flames were visible through the roof of the motel, fire crews were able to contain the fire quickly.

One person was taken from the unit that caught fire to hospital suffering from smoke inhalation, but is expected to recover.

The platoon chief told CTV.ca that while the fire damage was contained by fire crews on scene, smoke damage was quite extensive. The motel remains closed while the fire inspector is investigating, but the fire is not considered suspicious.

Lakeshore Road was closed in the morning while firefighters worked, but was reopened by 9 a.m.
