OWEN SOUND, Ont. - Bruce Power's plan to ship steam generators from Owen Sound, Ont., to a recycling site in Sweden could lead to major protests in the area.

Blue Mountains Mayor Ellen Anderson says a number of groups are concerned about the plan to ship 16 radioactive steam generators on the Great Lakes.

Blue Mountains Council has formally opposed the plan and has sent a letter to the Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission.

Anderson will be at the Sept. 29 hearing in Ottawa and has applied to speak against the proposal.

But Anderson -- who's a member of the Great Lakes Cities Initiative -- says a number of groups are opposed to the plan.

She doesn't want to name the groups but says some are prepared to travel to Grey Bruce to protest the shipment if it's approved by the commission.

Bruce Power wants to ship the decommissioned steam generators to Sweden for recycling and says there is little risk involved.

The company has said a person would have to stand beside one of the generators for a few hours to receive the same amount of radiation given off by a chest X-ray.
