Unionized workers at the massive downtown Delta Chelsea hotel said Tuesday they are on the verge of going on a two-week strike.

Members of Unite Here Local 75 say they could be on the picket lines outside the 27-storey-tall structure, located on Gerrard Street just west of Yonge Street, as early as 7 a.m. Wednesday.

In a news release, the union said negotiations with the hotel broke down on Monday.

The key issues include:

  • safer workloads
  • job security
  • wages
  • benefits

The union said had a 95 per cent mandate to call a strike, based on a vote held in the summertime. It reached a strike/lockout deadline last week, it said.

Besides the downtown location, the union said it is in contract talks with two other Delta hotels -- the Delta Toronto East and the Delta Airport West.

A spokesperson for the hotel could not be immediately reached for comment.

Local 75 said it represents 7,000 workers in the Toronto area.

Workers at the Radisson Airport hotel walked off the job on Oct. 21. That hotel is operated by the Westmont chain.

The union held a series of one-day job actions against that chain during the Toronto International Film Festival back in September.
