VANCOUVER - The Canadian refugee status of American actor Randy Quaid remains in limbo while lawyers work for and against his claim.

The lawyer for the Canada Border Service Agency, Jim Murray, was planning to argue today that Quaid shouldn't be allowed to remain in Canada, but that argument has been delayed for two weeks.

Quaid's lawyer Catherine Sas told the immigration adjudicator she needed more time to go through many documents involved in the case.

Murray told the hearing that despite claims made in an American court, Quaid is able to leave Canada to attend a California court hearing on vandalism charges connected to a home he once owned.

Quaid and his wife Evi gave up a $500,000 bond when they didn't appear in court last week because they had escaped to Canada to avoid what they said were "Hollywood star whackers."

Outside the hearing room, Sas disagreed that Quaid could go to California and return, saying his refugee claim would be prejudiced if he left the country.
