A 19-year-old man who died of gunshot wounds in the alley behind his mother’s northwest Toronto townhouse on Monday night is Toronto's 55th homicide victim of 2010.

Police have not yet released the victim's identity.

Investigators say the victim was found at about 10 p.m. Monday. He was taken to Sunnybrook Hospital for treatment but was pronounced dead.

Police found several empty shell casings near Sheppard Avenue West and Jane Street after residents in the area heard gunfire ring out.

A bullet hole could be seen in one wall on Tuesday.

One boy told of waking up to the sound of gunshots.

Area resident William Roberts told reporters: "We heard five or six shots. We went down to the basement to hide."

Witnesses told police that two men were seen running from the area before getting into a dark, four-door sedan.

"We are looking for any assistance the community can give us," Insp. Gerry Cashman said from the scene Monday night.

"There are several witnesses here who have been able to assist with information that will be helpful hopefully with solving this crime."

This isn't the first time violence has touched that townhouse complex.

In 2007, 11-year-old Ephraim Brown died from gunshots. He was caught in the crossfire of rival gangs during a family barbecue.

A trial is currently taking place for the men accused of killing Brown.

A townhouse resident said Tuesday the two events are like ripping a scab off an old wound.
