Police say they are searching for a suspect in an intentional hit-and-run that killed a young man in the city's Entertainment District over the weekend.

Vincent Dang, a 20-year-old business student at York University, died early Saturday after he was struck down by an SUV after an evening of partying. Police have launched a murder investigation into the death.

But as the search for a suspect continues, Dang's family is mourning the loss of their son, who they say was an ambitious young man with a bright future.

"I feel regret," said Dang's mother, Hien Nggyen, in an interview with CTV Toronto. "I lost my son and they might end up in jail."

The family had planned to spend Sunday celebrating Nggyen's birthday with friends.

"Someone else took his life on his mother's birthday," said family friend Kim Quach. "I will never see him again."

Dang lived in his family north of the city in Concord, and he recently got a part-time accounting job and was hoping to help out his parents. His parents have worked extra jobs to make ends meet since immigrating to Canada from Vietnam nearly three decades ago.

"He promised me, ‘Daddy, don't worry, I will graduate. You wait and see. I will.' And that's the last conversation I had with him in the last moment," said father Huyn Dang.

After that conversation, Dang went out for a night in the city with his friends.

Police say that Dang spent some time at the Rockwood Club at 31 Mercer Street near Blue Jays Way and Wellington Street. Inside the club, an altercation occurred and it later spilled outside.

But while Dang stood outside the club on the sidewalk with friends, the driver of a SUV sped down the street, pulled a U-turn and struck him. Dang was later pronounced dead.

The suspect driver has been described as a brown-skinned male, aged between 19-25, with a thin build, a moustache and a goatee. The suspect was wearing a black jacket with stripes on the collar and sleeve.

It's believed that several people were in the suspect vehicle, which is a dark grey SUV. Police are currently searching through surveillance video captured at the scene.

Friend Jannica Quach said that the loss, which she blamed on a "stupid fight," will be felt by many friends and family members.
