The Ontario Provincial Police are warning people that high-occupancy vehicle lanes (HOVs) aren't for stunt driving or lone drivers.

Shortly before noon on Thursday, an OPP officer was headed west on the QEW near the Appleby Line when it was passed by an SUV travelling in the HOV lane, the OPP said Thursday in a news release.

"The officer quickly determined that the speed of the SUV was well in excess of 150 km/h in the 100 km/h zone and that the driver was the lone occupant," police said.

To use an HOV lane, there must be at least two people in the vehicle.

"When signaled to stop, the SUV stopped -- right where it was in the HOV lane.  The officer was able to direct the SUV driver to move the vehicle without incident."

Yong Sun Oh, 35, of Oakville has been charged with:

stunt driving by excessive speed

failing to stop on the right for an emergency vehicle

improper use of HOV lane

failing to produce evidence of insurance

failing to produce a vehicle permit

Oh is to appear in Burlington traffic court on Jan. 18. No allegations against Oh have been proven in a court of law.

The OPP made this point: "Drivers are reminded that the speed limit in all HOV lanes is no greater than the other lanes of the highway, and when signaled to stop by an emergency vehicle, a driver must bring the vehicle to a stop on the right side of the roadway."
