TORONTO - Facebook users let their fingers do the talking and have selected the first name of a Toronto newborn by a razor-thin margin.
New mom Rommy Alpinelli decided to leave things to chance, or more specifically, in the virtual hands of Facebook users and online voters, to help select the first name of her firstborn child, a baby girl.The name "Melania" came out on top in the online vote organized by Canadian social commerce site FabFind.
FabFind CEO Bill Heilmann said in an email to The Canadian Press Tuesday that the name received 2,860 votes, a mere nine votes ahead of "Aria" which came in second.The name "Willow" finished third earning 1,456 votes. A total of 2,798 names were submitted.
Heilmann said Alpinelli delivered the seven-pound, four-ounce baby girl, named Melania Loren, Tuesday at a Toronto hospital.
The 34-year-old first-time mom had been on the hunt for a unique moniker for her daughter, wanting to find a pretty name that wasn't "super-common."
FabFind learned of Alpinelli's name dilemma from a friend who works in sales for the company, and they pitched the idea of helping Alpinelli name her newborn.
The person who submitted the winning name will earn 25,000 rewards points which they can use to redeem for FabFind deals.
Heilmann said by email that given how close the voting was, they've decided to award the runner-up with the same prize.
Alpinelli also goes home a winner.
Once she provides proof of the first name on the birth certificate, she will be able to redeem a year's worth of deals valued at an estimated $40,000.
