Some residents in the Victoria Beach area are debating measures to protect against shore erosion in the area.

Mary Hanson says a fierce storm in October washed away approximately 25 feet of municipal land in front of her cottage lot.

"We used to be able to drive in front of our cottages…now…there's no place to walk in front of our cottages," says Hanson.

About 17 lakefront cottages have been affected, with water now just metres away from some of them.

Those affected want a solution found and community consultation has been underway, with two meetings already held in 2011.

"We've seen a lot of interesting climatic changes over the last short while so to say this will never happen again, it will happen again," said Tom Farrell, reeve of the RM of Victoria Beach.

A proposed plan that some cottagers are supporting is a rock wall to prevent the lake bank from washing away.

But, not everyone is in favour of the idea.

Suzanne Forcese lives in the area and worries the rock wall would take up too much space on the beach.

"When I heard this revetment was going to be a permanent solution (and) was going to take up 37 feet of beach, honestly a part of me died," said Forcese.

She would like to see an alternative solution, such as building up sand along the bank.

Those who like the rock wall plan have submitted a proposal to provincial officials about how to proceed.

"The temporary solution would be giant sandbags up against the bank and they're four feet squared and hold a ton of sand, so they're huge," said Mary Hanson.

Hanson says sandbags would be in place for a year. After that, she hopes the rock wall will replace it.

Residents don't know how much a rock wall would cost, but it would be paid for by the 17 lakefront property owners.
