With a vote of 39 to three Tuesday afternoon, councillors opted to cancel a 2.6 per cent salary increase this year.

Under the planned increase, councillors would have made about $102,000 a year. Instead they will continue to be paid $99,000.

They also receive health, life insurance and dental coverage.

Mayor Rob Ford, who earns nearly $168,000, pledged to freeze salaries as part of his bid for mayor, which centered on reducing city spending.

Coun. Mike Del Grande put forward the motion. It was seconded by Coun. Doug Ford.
