Written condolences to Listowel firefighters' families
Selected Comment
On behalf of the 158 men and women of Richmond Hill Fire and Emergency services we want you to know our thoughts and prayers are with the family and friends during this difficult time. This is a very sad day for the fire service and one that will never be forgotten.

Listowel Volunteer Fire Department members Raymond Walter, 30, and Kenneth Rea, 56, were killed Thursday when they entered a fire-engulfed store to search for any shoppers left inside.
Premier Dalton McGuinty offered his condolences to the men's loved ones, calling the deaths tragic.
"Our volunteer firefighters take time away from their families to keep us safe," he said in a statement. "We rely on their selflessness, and today's tragedy is a solemn reminder that we must never take their sacrifices for granted."
Leave your message for the firefighters' families here.

If I am ever called to leave you, unexpectedly
Please take from me these parting thoughts to frame my legacy
When you remember me tomorrow, I pray you'll recall
A happy soul, who loved his family, loved his work as well
Please recollect a man who loved the chance to lend a hand
To save a life or property from some untimely end
Someone who heard the public call to safeguard streets and homes
Deliver breath to silent lungs to quench the hostile flames
But when you ponder how I came to make my final stand
Don't make me more than what I am - a decent caring man
Don't make me more in death than I, in life have ever been
Remember simply, one who served his god and fellow men
Remember our fallen brothers

WHEN I AM CALLED TO DUTY, GOD WHEREVER FLAMES MAY RACE, GIVE ME THE STRENGTH TO SAVE SOME LIFE WHATEVER BE ITS AGE.
HELP ME EMBRACE A LITTLE CHILD BEFORE IT IS TOO LATE, OR SAVE SOME OLDER PERSON FROM THE HORROR OF THAT FATE.
ENABLE ME TO BE ALERT AND HEAR THE WEAKEST SHOUT, AND QUICKLY AND EFFICIENTLY TO PUT THE FIRE OUT.
I WANT TO FILL MY CALLING AND TO GIVE THE BEST IN ME, TO GUARD MY EVERY NEIGHBOR AND PROTECT HIS PROPERTY.
AND IF ACCORDING TO OUR FATE, I HAVE TO LOSE MY LIFE, PLEASE BLESS WITH YOUR PROTECTING HAND MY CHILDERN AND MY MATE.

When I’m called to duty God wherever flames may rage, give me strength to save a life whatever be it’s age

I want to fill my calling and to give the best in me, to guard my neighbour and protect his property
And if according to your will I have to lose my life, bless with your protecting hand my children and my wife.

But the thoughts of this community must be with the firefighters who died and with their families.
Comfort may be difficult to find, but rememberance is a duty.
The deaths of Raymond Walter and Kenneth Rea also are a reminder of the dangers of the occupation they chose, and to which they necessarily brought a willingness to sacrifice much for the chance of saving lives. This is a high degree of heroism; all of us who live here should stand humbled before it.

our communities would not be safe.
We need to not focus on how they died but how these men lived - to serve their community.
To Mrs. Rae, we listened to you on radio this morning share about your husband - you are an inspiration and a further example of the key support to those who have family member commit to serving in the line of duty.
Thank you and again to all in this community, our prayers and thoughts.

Some call them brave heros since they lost their lives. They were heros long before then.
70% of all firefighters in North America are Volunteers, just as I am. Every day sons, daughters, mothers, and fathers run into these dangerous situations while others are running out. My deepest condolences to the families of these brave men.
I know I can speak on behalf of the Red Deer Emergency Service and say that we will honor you every time we go out to try and help someone the way you two helped others.
Remember Courage is not the absence of fear, but the realization that something is more important than fear.

Brother when you weep for me
Remember that it was meant to be
Lay me down and when you leave
Remember I'll be at your sleeve
In every dark and choking hall
I'll be there as you slowly crawl
on every roof in driving snow
I'll hold your coat and you will know
In cellars hot with searing heat
At windows where a gate you meet
In closets where young children hide
You know I'll be there at your side
The house from which I now respond
Is overstaffed with heroes gone
Men who answered one last bell
Did the job and did it well
As firefighters we understand
That death's a card dealt in our hand
A card we hope we never play
But one we hold there anyway
That card is something we ignore
As we crawl across a weakened floor
For we know that we're the only prayer
For anyone that might be there
So remember as you wipe your tears
The joy I knew throughout the years
As I did the job I loved to do
I pray that thought will see you through

“I have no ambition in this world but one, and that is to be a firefighter.
The position may, in the eyes of some, appear to be a lowly one; but we who know the work which the firefighter has to do believe that his is a noble calling. But, our proudest endeavor is to save lives of men
- the work of God Himself.
Under the impulse of such thoughts, the nobility of the occupation thrills us and stimulates us to deeds of daring,
even at the supreme sacrifice”.
