A section of two Toronto streets were shut after a suspicious package was found at Ryerson University Thursday afternoon.

Police say they were called at about 1 p.m. after a box with a blue ribbon was discovered by university security at the corner of Church and Gould Streets.

Crowds gathered and cars stopped to look at the dramatic downtown scenes as Toronto's joint Chemical, Biological, Radiological and Nuclear (CBRN) response team arrived.

Parts of Dundas Street East and Gerard Street East were closed for an hour.

Const. Wendy Drummond said the scare was diffused only after a man arrived on scene and claimed the package.

It was later found to be empty.
