A city councillor has drawn up an amendment to Toronto's all-out ban on street hockey that would give parents the option of applying for a permit on their street.

Josh Matlow, councillor for Ward 22, says he submitted a motion on the issue for the May 17-18 council meeting after receiving numerous complaints from parents and youth regarding the current bylaw.

Matlow believes the ban only makes sense for certain city streets.

He says parents on dead-end streets or roads or those with low speed limits should be able to apply for permits, taking legal responsibility for the games.

Matlow says the ban in its current form doesn't make sense considering that children are currently playing street hockey on many city streets.

"People have a reasonable belief that their kids are going to be safe," he said. "If you go out to many of these streets you're going to see these kids doing it anyway. Let's make it legal, let's reflect the reality of how kids are already using these streets."

He added that street-hockey players have already designed methods of keeping themselves safe including, yelling "car" when it is time to get off the street and "game on" when vehicles depart.
