Investigators continue to look into how a police raid in a small Ontario community went wrong, leaving one man dead and a police officer badly injured.

Police were executing a search warrant on a suspected crack house in Lindsay, Ont., a town about 130 kilometres northeast of Toronto, when shooting erupted late Wednesday morning.

The Special Investigations Unit was at the scene of the shooting on Thursday to gather evidence that would indicate how many shots were fired in the gunfight.

The SIU is called in any time there is a death, serious injury or allegation of sexual assault involving police in the province.

Police have not released the name of the 21-year-old man who was shot and killed in the incident, saying only that he's from the Durham area.

The victim's body has been removed from the scene of the shooting, and a post-mortem was conducted Thursday morning.

An officer from Peterborough, Ont., was also shot in the exchange. Const. Keith Calderwood, 37, was airlifted to St. Michael's hospital in Toronto where he remains in stable condition with injuries to his chest and leg.

Calderwood's wife, Carrie, has stayed by his side since she arrived at the hospital Wednesday afternoon.

Kawartha Lakes Police said five people found in the home during the raid were taken into custody. Four have been released without charge.

The fifth person, 39-year-old Jennifer Nicholson, was being held on an unrelated matter and has been charged with one count of breach of recognizance. She was due to appear in court later on Thursday.

Peterborough police have not said whether drugs were found inside the home.

Six officers from the Kawartha Lakes Police Service and two officers from the Peterborough Lakefield Police Service have been designated as witness officers, while four Peterborough officers have been identified as subject officers.
