A woman's body found in the grass near a rural road in the Uxbridge area on Friday night has been identified.

Police said they believe the woman to be 18-year-old Margarita Shumakova of Toronto. Her family has been notified.

Shumakova was discovered by officers who were in the area on an unrelated matter, while walking on Concession Road 8 between Wagg and Reid Roads.

This is Durham Region's second homicide of the year.

Police said the body had been in the grass for several days.

Neighbours said they didn't notice anything out of the ordinary in the quiet rural area before the police showed up on Friday evening.

Angelo Imbriglio said police lights were flashing and helicopters searched the area throughout the night.

"They searched for a while and then they left, then they came back around 3 a.m. and they've been sitting there all day," he said.

Police said they are treating the death as suspicious and further forensic testing is being completed.

Durham police are asking anyone with information or may have seen or been with Shumakova to call Det. Terry Haight at 1-888-579-1520 ext. 5247. Anonymous tips can be made to Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477) or online.
