Toronto cyclists protested the city's plan to scrap bike lanes along Jarvis Street on Wednesday by riding en masse along the embattled corridor.

The Toronto Cyclists Union held a massive ride Wednesday evening to protest council's decision to remove the bike lanes, as part of a new biking strategy that favours a network of separated trails over shared roadways.

Andrea Garcia, the bike union's director of advocacy and operations, said this week that cyclists were disappointed by Mayor Rob Ford's stance that cars matter more than cyclists.

"Mayor Ford chose to ignore the facts and the community while making decisions based on an ideology that bikes don't belong on arterial roads," Garcia said in a statement.

Council voted last week to replace the painted lanes on Jarvis, Birchmount Road and Pharmacy Avenue with a lane on Sherbourne Street separated by a concrete barrier.

Coun. Denzil Minnan-Wong, chair of the Public Works Committee, has said he would like the city to create a 100-kilometre network of bike trails separated from roadways.

Garcia said that while the Cyclists Union is excited about plans for a complete bike network, it should not come at the cost of bike lanes elsewhere.

The Jarvis lane cost $75,000 to install a year ago and will cost about $200,000 to remove. Ridership on the Jarvis lanes has grown from 300 cyclists a day to 900.

Not sure why they are protesting but it seems every time I'm driving down that street there's hardly anyone on their bikes.

Until they reverse their decision, Toronto cyclists should take up space *in the middle of the lanes* where they lawfully have a right to be.

Well if 1200 cyclists actually rode along these bike lanes while they existed, this would be a non issue.

Garcia is mistaken - Ford did not ignore any facts. The facts are there were very few cyclists using those lanes, even during rush hour while the number of cars are in the thousands.

Driving times on Jarvis have not been unacceptably impacted by adding the cycling lanes. If anything they will be improved with more people choosing to cycle instead of drive. Besides, even if Jarvis has another traffic lane and it serves and an arterial, drivers will just get caught in gridlock further downtown anyways. Adding traffic lanes has never solved congestion.

I believe these folks have no right to complain. Do they pay any fees what so ever like car drivers do people that own a car have to pay fees and large amount of gas tax that goes into maintaining our roads when these bikers pay their fair share then they have a right to say something.Until then shut up and get out of the way!

Who cares get rid of them all .
all the bikes dont follow the law in these lanes anaway.
waste of money
just let them on the regular roads and let them follow the same laws as cars.

I have done traffic counts in a VERY small town, and seen about 900 cars in an hour on a busy street. I cannot imagine how many cars go by all day on Jarvis. 900 bikes in a day? That's a drop in the bucket. Bike lane is not warranted at that number.

It's a non-issue. There are four lanes and only a few bikes. Any motorist can pass easily by using the left lane, without having to cross the double-yellow.

I dont get it, OK remove the bike lines, but a car wouldn't fit there anyways so there is no point. Reducing bike lines only makes bikes going in to side streets, being a bother to pedestrians. So here is the thing, lets destroy our planets and buy more cars :D
