A 48-year-old man is dead after his car collided with a passenger train in a small town north of Toronto on Sunday evening.

York Regional Police said the incident happened at about 6 p.m. when a southbound Ontario Northland train struck a two-door Pontiac at a railway crossing east of Highway 48 in East Gwillimbury.

Emergency crews found the compact car 300 metres south of where it had been hit. The car's driver was pronounced dead on scene.

All signals at the railway crossing were working properly at the time of the crash, police confirmed.

None of the 111 passengers on the train travelling to Toronto from North Bay were injured.

The deceased man's body has been transported to Toronto where an autopsy is expected to be conducted on Monday.

York Regional Police are investigating the incident with CN Police.
