Toronto police are investigating after a 28-year-old man was shot dead during a community barbecue in the city's west end.

Police said Jermaine Smith was pronounced dead on scene in the Scarlett Road and St. Clair Avenue West area at about 10 p.m. after he was shot during a barbecue attended by at least 100 people.

Police said they believe the incident was not "a random shooting" and are hoping witnesses will come forward.

"We're still investigating the possible motive for this," Sgt. Wayne Banks told CTV Toronto.

"We do not believe that this was a random shooting. It seemed too focused."

On Saturday, after dozens of parents and kids were sent running for cover, candles burned throughout the night.

Adoni McAnuff, who organized the barbecue, told CTV Toronto he knew Smith in high school.

"I was on the grill cooking and I heard bang, bang, bang, bang, bang," he said.

The sudden gunfire disrupted the family-friendly event and has left many people in the area afraid and doubting the safety of the area.

"It's living here in fear. Living here in fear," Paul Martines told CTV Toronto.

Police said Smith did not live in the housing complex where the shooting took place but that he had friends there.

A post-mortem has been scheduled for Monday.
