Police said Friday they are investigating the sudden death of a Mississauga toddler who died earlier this week.

Initial reports indicate the three-year-old child is a girl, but a name has not been released.

Sgt. Peter Brandwood of Peel Regional Police said on Friday the child was taken to a Mississauga walk-in clinic on Tuesday. After an examination, the child was taken to a local hospital.

Following further examinations at Trillium Hospital, the child was rushed to Toronto's Hospital for Sick Children in critical condition.

Brandwood told reporters the toddler was placed on life support but died the next day.

Police did not say on Friday what the condition of the child was before being admitted to a local hospital, but said health professionals advised that the child required more medical attention than what could be given in a walk-in clinic.

Peel's homicide bureau and Special Victims Unit are investigating the incident.

Police did not say if any arrests have been made.

The toddler's parents are in their 30s and live in a basement apartment of a home near Cawthra Road and Dundas Street East.

Neighbours said police have been canvassing the area since Tuesday.

Flore Torres, who has lived in the area for 19 years, told CTVToronto.ca in a telephone interview that the investigation gives her "goose bumps."

Torres said police asked her and her husband Wednesday evening if they noticed anything unusual. Torres told police she didn't know the family but said news of the incident comes as a shock, especially since the area is "such a quiet neighbourhood."

Peter Fuduric told CTVToronto.ca that police rang his doorbell late Tuesday evening around 11 p.m. Fuduric, who has lived in the neighbourhood for 30 years, said he couldn't provide police with any details about the young family except that he's seen two young children, a boy and a girl, play out front "a few times."
