The Toronto area suffered through a morning of traffic delays, accidents and power outages on Thursday after a bitter fall storm swept across the region overnight.

Reports of fallen trees and accidents flooded in from across the city overnight after a storm that brought as much as 50 millimetres of rain and northeasterly winds reached 50 kilometres an hour.

Residents are recommended to keep an umbrella on hand as Environment Canada expects more rain to fall throughout the day.

Toronto Hydro said on Thursday as many as 4,000 customers in East York and Scarborough lost power during the overnight storm.

Crews were still working to restore power to about 300 customers in the Morningside Drive and Ellesmere Avenue area. As of Thursday morning, power had been restored in most other areas.

Motorists were urged to drive with caution during the morning commute as rainfall continued to make already slippery roads even more treacherous.

The Bartley Bull Parkway was closed in Brampton after severe flooding made the road impassable.

Fallen trees were also causing issues in Mississauga, where the southbound Prince Edward Drive was blocked as crews cleared debris knocked down by the storm.

Environment Canada said there was a chance of more showers through the afternoon and temperatures were expected to hover between 8 C and 13 C throughout the day.
