A 27-year-old man is facing attempted murder charges after he and three others -- including a baby and toddler -- fell from a fourth floor balcony in the city's east end.

Police said the man, a mother and her two young children plunged from the balcony of a Scarborough high-rise just after 4 p.m. on Saturday.

The children, an 8-month-old and a 2-year-old, suffered life-threatening injuries in the incident and remain at Toronto's Hospital for Sick Children.

Their mother, who police have said is in her 30s, is being treated for serious injuries at Sunnybrook Hospital and is expected to recover.

Police arrested the man involved in the incident on scene. He was treated for minor injuries which he sustained in the fall.

Jerome Stephenson faces nine charges in connection with the incident:

• Attempted murder (3 counts)
• Aggravated assault (3 counts)
• Attempt to disarm a peace officer
• Assault with attempt to resist arrest (2 counts)

Witness Mike Holland, who lives in the high-rise, said the man attempted to grab an officer's gun while being apprehended by police.

After a brief Sunday court appearance on Sunday, the suspect was remanded into custody to await another court date on Nov. 10.

Meanwhile, the Toronto judge has imposed a publication ban in the case to protect the identity of the children.
