Toronto police say the driver of an SUV that crashed at high speed, rolled and then burned on the Don Valley Parkway last week was a 75-year-old man.

Beyond that, however, police aren't saying much else about the fatal incident, including what caused it or the driver's medical condition.

"We're not releasing any details at this point," Const. Tony Vella told CTV News on Wednesday.

He did say that next of kin had been notified and that "I'm sure" an autopsy had been performed by now. More information would be released in the future, Vella said.

The Nov. 10 crash occurred at about 11:20 a.m. just north of Gerrard Street East in the DVP's southbound lanes.

Witnesses reported seeing the 2011 BMW X3 travelling southbound at a high rate of speed. It bumped another car, rubbed the guardrail with a tire and then slammed into a concrete support beam before becoming airborne.

Canada AM weather anchor Jeff Hutcheson, who was on the DVP at the time, said the vehicle was already on fire at the time it went airborne.

However, police said in a Nov. 10 news release that the vehicle first swerved left, struck the centre median, continued southbound, struck a guardrail, came to a stop and then caught fire.

Emergency personnel pronounced the SUV's driver, who was still inside the vehicle, dead at the scene.
