Police say they tried to investigate a narcotics-related matter at the Pickering Nuclear Generating Station where 11 workers were fired for allegedly breaking the electricity company's code of conduct.

CTV's Paul Bliss reports that Durham Regional Police were called about violations "of a drug nature" inside the plant.

The workers were terminated by Ontario Power Generation on Nov. 18 for breaching the company's code of conduct.

No charges have been laid. Police said they were unable to go inside the plant because the area in question had radiation restrictions. The investigation was conducted internally by OPG.

The company refused to specify what the workers did to warrant the firings, Bliss reports.

Chris Bentley, Ontario's minister of energy told Bliss on Monday afternoon that he has spoken with the OPG's CEO Tom Mitchell.

Bentley said that Mitchell told him that at no time was safety or security compromised at the plant.

"I want to assure Ontarians that the safety and security of Ontario's energy facilities is my top priority," Bentley said.

Mitchell also said that OPG has and will continue to co-operate with police.

A company spokesperson said that the fired staff were working in supporting roles to operations.
