A 20-year-old man was remanded into custody Monday after a court appearance to face charges connected to a two-vehicle crash in Mississauga that claimed the life of a 40-year-old father on the weekend.

Darren Millett limped into court Monday morning, slumping over and crying when the charges against him were read.

Millett faces nine alcohol-related charges in connection with the crash including criminal negligence causing death and impaired operation of a motor vehicle causing bodily harm.

Mounir Mahious, 40, was killed when he was ejected from his white Kia sedan after the vehicle was struck by a black Dodge hatchback.

The collision occurred at about 3:30 a.m. on Cawthra Road near Queen Elizabeth Way on Sunday morning.

Mahious' two-year-old son was also ejected from the car and was rushed to Toronto's Hospital for Sick Children with critical injuries. The boy remains in stable condition.

The child's mother, who was also in the vehicle, suffered only minor injuries.

Two people in the second vehicle were taken to hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

Millett's defence lawyer Edmond Brown asked that his client be placed in protective custody because of his injuries and the nature of the allegations.

Millett is due back in court Dec. 21 at 9:30 a.m. in Brampton.

Police are still looking for any witnesses to the collision.
