Poor weather has forced Porter Airlines to cancel a number of flights out of Toronto Island's Billy Bishop Airport on Friday.

However, Brad Cicero, a spokesman for the airline, said there will be some arrivals "on a limited basis," but cautioned that those incoming flights would be delayed.

There was no word if Air Canada flights have also been suspended at the city centre airport.

Those flying out of Toronto are advised to check the status of their flights before heading to the airport.

The cancellations come as much of southern Ontario braces for more freezing rain, after a cocktail of snow and frigid temperatures wreaked havoc in the region.

A freezing rain warning was issued for the Toronto area on Friday, warning residents to expect heavy precipitation through the day and into Saturday morning.

According to Environment Canada, a complex low pressure system will bring rain across the area through the evening as temperatures flirt with the freezing mark.

The freezing rain will begin in the Kitchener-Waterloo area and will reach the Toronto area later in the day. Between 3 and 6 millimetes of freezing rain are expected in most parts of the region.

Ontario Provincial Police said they received more than 600 calls regarding collisions, spin outs and fender benders Friday morning as the Greater Toronto Area was hit with a blast of severe winter weather.

The OPP warned commuters to reduce their speeds through the day to protect themselves and other drivers. More than 20 collisions were reported within a single 45 minute period during the peak morning commute.

The weather also caused delays and cancellations at Toronto's Pearson International Airport on Friday.

Generally dry weather was expected to resume after a round of precipitation Saturday morning, while Sunday, New Year's Day, will see mild conditions with a few showers.
