Toronto police and the province's Special Investigation Unit were investigating after a man was shot multiple times outside a west-end shopping plaza on Friday.

Const. Tony Vella said police received reports that a man was armed with a knife at the Power Centre Plaza at 2625 Weston Rd., north of Highway 7 and east of Highway 401 at about 12:30 p.m.

The SIU said that several shots were fired by police after an interaction between a man and police. The man had started making his way toward Weston Road in the direction of the Hwy. 401 eastbound ramp.

The man was taken to Sunnybrook hospital with life-threatening injuries.

Toronto EMS said a man was transported to hospital with multiple gunshot wounds.

Witnesses told CTV Toronto that they heard a number of gunshots ring out after police had confronted the man.

"There was a man in a toque, he had a knife, bigger than a steak knife and they were telling him to drop the weapon, to get down to the ground," Stephanie Borys said. "He didn't listen and all of a sudden he ran behind the building and that's the last I saw."

Traffic was being diverted from the Weston Road at Power Centre Plaza area and Ontario Provincial Police had also closed the westbound collector lanes of Highway 401 at Weston Road.

A police command post had been set up in the area as the shooting investigation continues.

The SIU has assigned seven investigators and three forensic investigators to probe the circumstances of the incident.
