One man is dead and a Toronto police officer sustained injuries following a fatal shooting in an east-end neighbourhood Friday morning.

Officers were called to Milverton Boulevard in the Coxwell Avenue and Danforth Road area before 10:30 a.m. following reports of a suspicious incident involving a man with scissors.

CTV Toronto's Austin Delaney said that the 29-year-old man, clothed only in a hospital robe, escaped from nearby East York General Hospital.

Police confronted the man armed with two pairs of scissors before at least three shots were fired at point blank range, a witness told CTV Toronto.

The man was transported to St. Michael's Hospital without vital signs as emergency workers performed CPR on him.

One witness walking his dog in the area at the time of the incident said he saw "a concentration of officers" trying to constrain the man before the shots were fired.

"One (officer) raised his arm and fired three shots at him point blank perhaps two feet away from the man and the man fell to the ground," the witness told CTV Toronto.

Ontario's Special Investigations Unit, which has been called in to investigate, confirmed that the man died in hospital.

The SIU is called when there has been death, serious injury or allegations of sexual assault involving the police.
