Police have arrested seven men for allegedly stealing $50,000 of copper from a Hydro One facility in Etobicoke.
Late Saturday, thieves broke into the compound at 70 Baywood Rd. using bolt cutters. They then loaded the van with copper and drove away, Toronto police said in a statement.
Not long after the incident, police made seven arrests near the property.
Authorities also confirmed they recovered the property.
The seven men ranging in age from 26 to 46 are scheduled to appear in court Sunday at Old City Hall Court.
Incidents of copper theft are often linked to the metal's fluctuating value. Thieves have been known to steal copper from railways, outdoor oil tanks, hydro equipment, such as transformers, and even churches. They then sell the copper to scrap metal recyclers to make a profit.
