The Toronto Police Services Board is investigating accusations that one of its top cops arrived at work last week while under the influence of alcohol.

Supt. Earl Witty, who heads up Toronto Police's traffic services and RIDE program, has been suspended after he allegedly reported to work on Feb. 9 with alcohol on his breath and appeared impaired.

Alok Mukherjee, chairman of the board, told CP24 afternoon that the board is looking into the incident.

"Right now there is an investigation going on by the Police Services Professional Standards and once the investigation is complete then according to the Police Services Act a determination will be made as to what course of action should be followed," Mukherjee said.

Mukherjee said a number of subordinates met with Witty in his office before he was driven home. Witty was not subjected to a breathalyzer test.

However, Mukherjee said the investigation is in its early stages and there was no timeline for the probe. The investigation will also probe whether medication played a factor in the incident.

"I'm saddened by it. In fact deeply saddened. I have a very high respect for Supt. Witty," Mukherjee said. "I have admired him as a very capable officer."

The incident comes amid reports that Witty, a 38-year veteran of the force, is mulling retirement.
