TORONTO - Former U.S. vice-president Dick Cheney has cancelled a Canadian speaking appearance due to security concerns.

Cheney was slated to talk about his experiences in office and the current American political situation at the Metro Toronto Convention Centre on April 24.

The event promoter says Cheney and his daughter Elizabeth decided against the engagement as a result of demonstrations at his appearance in Vancouver last fall.

He says they decided it was better to stay out of Canada for their personal safety.

In September, unruly demonstrators who accused Cheney of war crimes blocked entrances to the exclusive Vancouver Club where he was speaking.

He was forced to stay holed up in the club for seven hours before it was deemed safe for him to leave.
