Firefighters are putting out small spot fires after a large blaze broke out in a Vaughan home Thursday afternoon, just a few blocks away from another fire hours earlier.

Deputy Fire Chief Larry Bentley said the fire at a two-storey home on Vellore Woods Boulevard and Doe Trail is under control, but there are still flames in some areas of the house.

Bentley said damage caused by the fire is estimated to be at least $500,000.

Crews had to cut a hole in the roof to let smoke escape from the home, which is near Weston Road and Major MacKenzie Drive.

Firefighters said the structure partially collapsed inside, and immediate neighbours were evacuated. Firefighters were inside the building during the collapse, but no injuries have been reported.

Earlier, firefighters at the scene told CTV that they thought a car in the garage was on fire, then the fire spread to the house, but Bentley could not confirm this.

About two hours earlier, EMS responded to a call for a house fire one kilometre away on Portsmouth Road.
