One man is dead after a crash in Markham, Ont., which saw one vehicle lose control and flip onto its hood before crashing into a nearby business.

York Regional Police closed a stretch of 16th Avenue at Highway 48 in the City of Markham after the early-morning crash.

Police say a BMW X5 was moving at a high rate of speed when the driver lost control while rounding a curve.

The vehicle struck a curb and left the road, crashing against a business plaza and coming to rest upside down and crumpled next to a nearby pine tree.

The driver was thrown about 30 metres clear of the wreck, which was discovered shortly before 6 a.m. Police say he died instantly.

Part of the shattered car tore through at least one plaza window. Some debris, broken tree limbs and one of the victim's shoes landed on the plaza's roof.

The victim's other shoe was found in a parking lot nearby. A red jacket was left hanging from a nearby bush.

The front of a vet clinic in the plaza was destroyed by the crash and the owner was forced to remove several animals, including a bird and a rabbit, as a precaution.

"All the windows have been blown out. Glass and even pieces of the car have gone through the building to the other side," Dr. Clifford Redford told CTV Toronto.
