Residents in Toronto and the surrounding area best slip into some shorts as a powerful heat wave is expected to arrive Monday morning and last through the week.

Environment Canada has issued a special weather statement for much of southwestern Ontario, warning that "very warm air" will arrive on Monday and is expected to intensify through the week.

Monday's temperature is expected to reach as high as 28 C in the Toronto area, with the humidity making it feel much hotter. But that is nothing compared to what the region has in store for itself mid-week.

The statement forecasts a "prolonged hot and humid episode" lasting from Tuesday through Thursday – when temperatures are expected to reach as high as 33 C before humidex values are considered.

"The mercury is anticipated to soar well into the 30s Tuesday and likely persist through Thursday, affecting many communities across Southwestern Ontario to the greater Toronto," the weather statement said.

When humidex values are taken into consideration, the three-day heat wave is expected to feel like 40 C and higher. The weather network said humidex advisories may be issued Monday afternoon.

Night-time temperatures are not expected to offer much reprieve for overheated southwestern Ontarians. The temperature is not expected to drop below 22 C during the night in many areas.

Environment Canada is suggesting residents stay in an air conditioned place and seek shade whenever possible during the heat event.

A Friday cold front is expected to cool much of the area, but temperatures are only expected to drop into the mid-20s in the Toronto area.

Environment Canada's hot weather statement has been issued for much of southwestern Ontario, including Toronto, Windsor, Hamilton, Barrie, Kingston and Ottawa.
